Cancellieri Demonstrates Brief Sparks of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
