No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
