The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
