Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
